Sarh, formerly known as Sallie, was a young girl thrilled to meet the president with one of her sisters. They rode in a horse drawn carriage to the battlefield of Gettysburg, where they immediately ran off to play and explore. During their exploration, the girls stumbled upon Judge David Wills home where he was hosting the president for his stay in Gettysburg. When they arrived, there was a crowd surrounding the President Lincoln, so they joined the crowd patiently waiting for their turn to meet him. She describes her encounter with him as such: "He was so tall that he stooped to take my hand, which seemed so small in his. Silently he smiled down upon me." Still dazed by meeting him, her and her sister wandered back to the battlefield to wait for him to give his speech. She recalls that he rode in on horseback and that she felt so close to the president as he gave his speech. She also recalls the crowd being silent as "our Menallen Friends" Meeting. There was no applause when he stopped speaking."
